How to Plan a Week of Outfits in One Sitting
Planning a week of outfits sounds like something other people do. It takes about ten minutes on a Sunday if the closet is already on your phone, and it buys back five weekday mornings.
Why a week and not a day
Deciding each morning is seven small decisions made when you are least able to make them. Deciding on Sunday is one medium decision made with coffee. The week view also catches things the morning view cannot: the same jumper on Monday and Tuesday, the good shoes on the day it will rain, nothing clean left for Friday.
The method
- Describe the week, not the outfits. "Office Monday to Wednesday, dinner Thursday, nothing Friday, a wedding Saturday." In Megu that sentence is the whole input; the planner lays out one look per day to match, reading the forecast for each.
- Fix the anchors first. The wedding, the presentation, the date. Those looks are decided on their own merits and the rest of the week is arranged around them, so that the pieces they need are not used up on a Tuesday.
- Let the app fill the ordinary days. Do not hand-pick Tuesday. Look at what it offers and swipe or swap. The planner's job is to avoid repeats and respect the weather; yours is to say no when it is wrong.
- Leave one day loose. Something will change. A planned look you can drop is better than a planned look you resent.
On repeats
Nobody minds wearing the same jeans twice in a week. Everybody minds the same shirt on consecutive days. A good planner treats those differently: it will reuse a bottom or a pair of shoes, and it will not put the same top back until it has had a rest. If the app you are using repeats a top two days running, it is not planning; it is listing.
When the week changes
It will. The point of a plan is not that you follow it; it is that when Thursday moves, you are changing one day rather than starting from nothing. In Megu you re-describe the week from that day on and it re-plans forward, leaving the days you have already worn alone.
The same trick packs a bag
A week away is a week plan with a constraint: the pieces have to fit in one case and go with each other. Packing with a closet app is the same method with the suitcase as the closet.
Questions
Can a closet app plan outfits for a whole week?
Yes. Tell Megu what the week looks like in a sentence and it lays out one look per day, matched to the forecast and to what each day is for, without repeating tops on consecutive days.
What happens if my plans change mid-week?
Re-describe the week from that day forward and the planner rebuilds the remaining days, leaving the ones you have already worn as they were.
