How to Pack a Suitcase With a Digital Closet

The principle

You are not packing clothes; you are packing outfits. Four days need four looks, plus a spare. If every top goes with every bottom you have packed, five looks need far fewer pieces than five separate outfits would. The whole game is choosing pieces that combine.

The method, with an app

  1. Describe the trip like a week. "Four days in Lisbon, two of them meetings, one dinner, walking the rest." In Megu the planner takes that sentence and lays out a look per day, reading the forecast for where you are going, not where you are.
  2. Look at the pieces, not the days. The plan is a list of looks; the packing list is the set of pieces those looks use. Count them. If it is more than you want to carry, go back and swap the outliers: the one look that needs its own shoes, the jumper nothing else uses.
  3. Swap toward overlap. Ask for the dinner look built around trousers you are already taking. Ask for the meeting look with the same shoes as the walking day. Each swap that reuses a piece removes one from the case.
  4. Pack from the list. Lay the pieces on the bed, tick them against the plan, close the case. Nothing goes in that is not in a look.

The weather you are going to

The commonest packing mistake is dressing for home. A closet app that reads a forecast should read the destination's, for the dates of the trip. If yours only knows today's weather at your current location, use the hourly forecast for the destination yourself and read the hours you will be outside.

While you are there

The plan is on your phone. Each morning, open it before the case. If the day changes, re-describe the rest of the trip and let it re-plan from what you packed, which is now the closet. A plan you can revise is the difference between packing light and packing wrong.

Open your closet.
