What an AI Stylist App Actually Does
Every closet app now says it has an AI stylist. Some of them mean it. Here is what the phrase should mean and how to tell.
What "AI stylist" should mean
You say what you are dressing for, in your own words, and get back a specific outfit assembled from clothes you own, with a reason. "Wedding tonight" should produce a look, not a list of tips. "Office, but not a suit" should understand both halves. "Warmer than what I wore yesterday" should know what you wore yesterday.
That last requirement is the tell. A stylist that does not know your closet is a fashion chatbot. It can be charming; it cannot dress you.
What it needs from you
- A digitised closet. Everything else is downstream. The stylist can only combine what it can see.
- Decent photos of each piece. The stylist reads colour, formality and kind from the image. A navy shirt that photographed as black will be styled as black.
- A few weeks of yes and no. The swipes and swaps are how it learns what "casual" means to you as opposed to in general.
Styling your closet versus styling a shop
Some AI stylists are sales tools: they build the look from your closet plus things they would like you to buy, and the "missing piece" is always for sale. Others, Megu among them, only ever dress you from what you own. Neither is dishonest, but they are different products. If you want to buy less, choose the one that cannot sell you anything.
What to ask it
Specific briefs get specific answers. Good ones: "first day at a new job", "dinner with her parents", "something with the green trousers", "packing for four days in Lisbon". Weak ones: "make me look good". The stylist is not a mind reader; it is a very fast colleague who has memorised your wardrobe.
And then you decide
A stylist proposes. In Megu the proposed look has a name, a reason and a button to put it on the calendar; it does not go on the calendar until you say so, and any single piece can be swapped. The AI is there to make the first move so that your morning is a yes or no rather than a search.
Questions
Is an AI stylist app the same as a digital closet app?
The closet is the inventory; the stylist is what uses it. An AI stylist that does not have your closet can only give general advice. Megu is both: the closet is built first, and the stylist only dresses you from it.
Does an AI stylist recommend things to buy?
