Digital Closet vs Spreadsheet vs Photo Album

The spreadsheet

Row per garment; columns for kind, colour, brand, season, last worn. It is the most complete system on paper and the least used in practice. The problem is not the data model. It is that a spreadsheet cannot look at a shirt, so every entry is typed, every update is typed, and after the first purchase that goes unrecorded the sheet is wrong and you know it. Nobody opens a wrong spreadsheet.

Survives a month: rarely. Helps you get dressed: no.

The photo album

A folder of outfit selfies, or of individual pieces. Cheap, fast, and it does exactly one thing: it reminds you of looks that once worked. It cannot separate the pieces, so it cannot recombine them, filter them, or tell you what you have not worn. It is a memory, not an inventory.

Survives a month: often, because it costs nothing. Helps you get dressed: a little, on the days you remember to look.

The digital closet app

Photographs, like the album, but each piece cut out and tagged, like the spreadsheet, without the typing. The grid is the inventory; the tags are the columns; the app fills them in. On top of that sits the part neither of the others can do: assembling the pieces into a look for today.

Survives a month: if you get past the first evening, yes. Helps you get dressed: that is the point.

The honest version

If you want a list, keep the spreadsheet. If you want to remember good outfits, keep the album. If you want to stop thinking about it, the closet app is the only one of the three that removes the work rather than moving it.
